St Andrew’s Village Ballina is home to more than 120 older Australians who have chosen us for their care, safety, and quality of life. Many have lived their entire lives in the Northern Rivers. Some built the local businesses we rely on, taught in our schools, raised families in our streets, and shaped the community we are now privileged to serve.
These residents now live with complex health needs; multiple chronic conditions, frailty, cognitive decline, mobility challenges, and the unpredictability that comes with ageing. They rely on clinical oversight to keep them stable, comfortable, and at home with us.
But right now, we face a growing challenge. Too few local GPs are available to accept older people in care as patients and to visit regularly.
We do have a couple of dedicated local GPs who support our residents, and their contribution is invaluable.
This is a quiet problem, but it’s affecting the daily lives of older Australians in our care.
Even with strong internal clinical capability, some decisions must come from a medical practitioner. Timely reviews, prescribing, palliative planning, escalation decisions, and chronic-disease management all rely on GP input.
The regional strain is real. Local general practice is under intense pressure. Clinics are full, the workforce is stretched, and aged-care work doesn’t always fit neatly into daily practice schedules. Incentives still lag behind the complexity of this work.
St Andrew’s is looking for:
- local GPs willing to take on even a small number of residents
• practices prepared to commit to regular visits
• shared-care arrangements to spread the load
• registrars or fellows wanting to build aged-care experience
• sessional or structured arrangements if that works better for practices
Even modest involvement makes a major difference.
St Andrew’s is part of the health fabric of the Northern Rivers. We keep older people living safely, and we provide comfort, stability, and dignity. But we cannot do this alone.
An open invitation to local GPs and practices
This is not a criticism of general practice. It’s an invitation.
If you’re a GP or practice in Ballina or the surrounding area and you have capacity, to accept a small number of residents or partner with us for regular visits, we would welcome a conversation.
St Andrew’s Village Ballina is ready to work in a way that is predictable, safe, supported, and sustainable for you.
Older Australians in care deserve consistent medical oversight. Our community expects it.
And with your partnership, we can continue to deliver the standard of care that our residents—and your future patients—deserve.
