When choosing an aged care home, families often ask about care, safety and comfort. Increasingly, they are asking something more:
“How will you help my mum or dad stay independent?”
At St Andrew’s, we believe that aged care should not only support people as their needs change. It should also help them maintain their strength, mobility and confidence for as long as possible.
That is why we have introduced Physio Active, our physiotherapy-led Reablement & Wellness Program.
A different approach to care
Traditional aged care models often focus on responding to decline. Physio Active takes a more proactive approach.
We focus on supporting residents to:
- Stay stronger for longer
- Maintain balance and stability
- Move safely and confidently
- Continue everyday activities with greater independence
These are the things that make a real difference to daily life, not just clinically, but personally.
For many residents, this means continuing to walk to meals, getting in and out of a chair more easily, and feeling more confident moving around their home.
More than exercise — clinically guided reablement
Not all exercise is beneficial, and not all residents have the same needs.
That is why Physio Active is led by qualified physiotherapists, not delivered as a general activity or unsupervised gym.
Every resident who participates:
- Is individually assessed
- Has clear, realistic goals
- Receives a program tailored to their ability and needs
- Participates in structured, supervised sessions
This ensures that programs are not only effective, but also safe. Physio Active is a clinical service, not a lifestyle activity.
That distinction is what allows us to focus on meaningful outcomes such as improved mobility, reduced falls risk, and greater confidence.
Introducing the Physio Active Studio
As part of the program, we have created the Physio Active Studio — a dedicated, supervised space designed specifically for reablement.
The studio allows us to deliver:
- Small, targeted group sessions
- Individual physiotherapy programs
- Equipment-based strength and balance training where appropriate
Unlike a traditional gym, the Physio Active Studio is:
- Fully supervised
- Clinically guided
- Used only as part of structured programs
This creates a safe, supportive environment where residents can build strength and confidence with professional guidance.
Personalised, goal-focused care
Every resident’s journey is different. Some may be working towards improving balance. Others may want to maintain their mobility or reduce reliance on assistance for everyday tasks.
Physio Active is designed to be:
- Individualised based on each resident’s needs
- Goal-focused with clear, practical outcomes
- Flexible adapting as needs change over time
It is not about pushing people beyond their limits. It is about helping them achieve what matters to them, safely and realistically.
Why it matters
Maintaining mobility and confidence has a direct impact on quality of life. Residents who feel stronger and more stable are more likely to:
- Stay active and engaged
- Participate in daily routines
- Maintain independence for longer
- Feel more confident in their environment
Reablement also plays an important role in reducing falls risk, which is a key concern for both residents and families.
A commitment to better outcomes
Physio Active reflects a broader commitment at St Andrew’s, to deliver care that is not only safe and supportive, but also proactive and focused on maintaining independence. It brings together clinical expertise, structured programs and a clear philosophy of care. For residents, this means greater opportunity to stay active and confident. For families, it provides reassurance that their loved one is being supported to maintain their independence. And for our organisation, it represents a clear and practical step forward in delivering high-quality aged care.
At St Andrew’s, care is not just about support — it’s about helping people continue to live well.
